Vein Center

The SURGERY SOUTH VEI CENTER specializes in the evaluation and treatment of varicose veins, leg ulcers and their complications. The center is staffed by Dr. Nallathambi and Dr. Escalera, both experienced board certified surgeons, and Mr. Kris Meka, a certified Vascular Ultrasound Technologist.

What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins are the visible manifestations of mal function or failure of the “one way valves” of the veins of the legs. This causes the blood to backflow or stagnate in the veins instead of returning efficiently to the heart. The backflow and stagnation of blood in the veins results in increase pressure within the vein causing them to dilate. The clinical or visible manifestation then varies from very small intradermal (in the skin) reddish or bluish veins referred to as telangectasias or “spider veins” to slightly bigger, more prominent blue-black veins called reticular veins to the very tortuous prominent veins commonly referred to as “varicose veins”.

When should you seek treatment?
As soon as you suspect or notice you have a problem. Besides the visible manifestations of varicose veins (see above), you may experience symptoms such as pain, swelling, itching, tightness and tiredness of the legs after standing for prolonged periods of time. Correcting the problem early-on not only will have better results, but may prevent the occurrence of unsightly skin changes and leg ulcers and their complications.

What do we do?
Recent advances in diagnostic and surgical procedures offer new options in the evaluation and treatment of patients with varicose veins. Venous flow is mapped and the problem areas accurately determined using state-of-the-art Duplex/Doppler ultrasound. Once the problem is accurately diagnosed, the affected areas can then be ablated using laser technology (a minimally invasive procedure) under local anesthesia in the office. The procedure is FDA approved and covered by many insurance plans. Other modalities of treatment may be indicated such as Sclerotherapy (foam injection of varicosities)and Microphlebectomy (removal of varicose veins thru tiny incisions that do not require stitches). For more information please contact us.
